College Admissions Recruitment Tour of Africa 

Admissions leaders from some of the top colleges and universities in the United States will tour Africa in August and September for a series of recruitment and informational programs for all interested students, school counselors, and administrators. The programs will focus on undergraduate educational study opportunities available at our colleges and universities. We will be available to answer your questions about admissions, financial aid, and other resources to support your study at our institutions.

Derek DuBose is the Associate Vice Chancellor for Enrollment and Director of Admission at the University of Denver and a former NACAC Board Director. A first-generation college graduate with degrees from The University of Toledo, and the University of Southern California, Derek is a champion for college access, equity and opportunity in higher education and is a firm believer in putting students first. Prior to his move to Denver, his career in college admissions was nurtured as a member of the leadership teams at USC, The Ohio State University, George Mason University, and Miami University. Outside of the office as a lover of the performing arts and former Walt Disney World Entertainer, Derek can still be found on stage for live karaoke, along with mentoring the next generation of college cheerleaders where he was featured in RAH! MTV Cheerleading Challenge with Paula Abdul, and continues to choreograph and judge for several cheer and dance associations. He looks forward to connecting with all of you, and celebrating the journey of the college search process.

Shawn Felton is Executive Director of Undergraduate Admissions and Deputy Chief Admissions and Enrollment Officer at Cornell University, located in Ithaca, New York. On behalf of the university, Shawn oversees all aspects of Undergraduate Admissions and he has responsibility for admissions policy and practice, and broader enrollment management work at Cornell University. Shawn has been with Cornell University for more than 19 years. Before arriving in Ithaca to join Cornell, Shawn served for nearly three years as Assistant Dean of Admissions at the University of Virginia (UVA), his alma mater, where he led recruitment and admissions efforts for students interested in the performing and visual arts. Shawn has a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree, and a Master of Arts (MA) degree in Music, specializing in Ethnomusicology and Music Composition, from the University of Virginia.

Vern Granger is Director of Admissions at the University of Connecticut (UConn). In his current role, he works on UConn’s worldwide outreach to high-achieving and diverse students, its selection process, development of the university admission process and practices, the transition of new students, and the advancement of UConn’s position as one of the preeminent institutions in the country. Vern is also Chair of the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC). He received his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, and his master’s degree from North Carolina State University.

Johnnie Johnson was born in Chicago, IL, and completed his undergraduate degree in Economics & Business and Sociology at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, IA. Johnnie began his admissions career as an admissions counselor after graduating from his alma mater in 1997. Johnnie moved to Kentucky to work at Georgetown College in Georgetown, KY in July 2000, and served in multiple roles including the Senior Associate Director of Admissions and the Director of Admissions. Johnnie joined the Transylvania University admissions office in July 2011 and served in many roles within the admissions office, ending as the Vice President for Admissions from 2019-2022. Johnnie is now the Vice President for Enrollment Management at Washington College after joining the institution in September 2022. Johnnie has served on local and national boards, including the National Association of College Admissions Counseling, and the YMCA Black Achievers Program. He is also a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.

Derek Kindle is the vice provost for enrollment management and provides overall leadership for the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s enrollment, including the Offices of the Registrar, Undergraduate Admissions and Recruitment, Student Financial Aid and the SSTAR (Student Success Through Applied Research) Lab, a research-practice partnership.

Kindle has over 20 years of experience in higher education and has held roles in the Offices of Admissions, Financial Aid, Bursar, and Enrollment Management. A nationally recognized higher education expert, he serves in leadership positions with the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA), College Board, the Higher Education Loan Coalition (HELC), and American Talent Initiative (ATI). .

Currently, Kindle is on the faculty of the University of Southern California Rossier School of Education's Enrollment Research, Policy, and Practice (USC CERPP) program and advises a multi-organizational task force on transparency and clarity on institutional aid offers. Previously, he was a commissioner for the Accrediting Council for Continuing Education and Training (ACCET) and a member of the U.S. Department of Education’s Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) design team. He contributed to an early Government Accountability Office study on FAFSA simplification. Prior to his current role, he was UW-Madison’s director of student financial aid July 2016 ─ March 2020. In this role, he oversaw the administration of approximately $480M in federal, state, institutional, and private aid. .

Kindle earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees with honors at Howard University in Washington, D.C.

Currently serving as VP for Enrollment Management at the College of the Holy Cross. LeSane has over 20 years of experience, having served for six years as VP for Enrollment & Dean of Admissions at Allegheny College, and fourteen years at Carnegie Mellon University in a progression of leadership roles. LeSane has been active both in professional associations and in the community, participating on steering committees for high schools, serving as a committee chair for various community-based initiatives; and as a faculty member for numerous programs. He recently served on the Board of the Directors for the National Association for College Admission Counseling and is currently serving on the Board of Directors for the YMCA in Worcester, MA. LeSane holds a B.A. in Political Science from Hampton University and a Master of Public Management, Concentration in Leadership in Higher Education, from Carnegie Mellon University.

In his capacity as Associate Vice Chancellor of Admissions & Enrollment, Femi provides vision, strategy and leadership in the recruitment and evaluation of California's public flagship. His vision and leadership in undergraduate admissions outreach initiatives targeting the state’s, underrepresented, undocumented, underserved and first-generation students have resulted in four consecutive years of the most ethnically and geographically diverse classes of students to Berkeley in 3 decades. Femi's been successful at building outreach and evaluation processes that have resulted in greater diversity at Stanford University, Cornell University, University of Delaware, Ithaca College, and now University of California, Berkeley. He sits on national college access boards and has done work to establish higher education pipelines for students and educators throughout sub-Saharan Africa. With degrees from Mansfield University of Pennsylvania and Ithaca College, Femi remains committed to the scholarship of equity in education as he is also currently pursuing a doctoral degree at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Education.

Calvin Wise is the Director of Admissions, Recruitment at Johns Hopkins University serving in his 12th year at the university and 14th in the profession. In his role, Calvin is a member of the senior leadership team, oversees undergraduate recruitment strategy, and chairs selection committee. Alongside his in-office responsibilities, Calvin works with a number of campus-wide committees focused on student success including co-chairing the university’s First Generation/Limited Income Practitioners Planning Group. Before coming to Hopkins, he worked at his alma mater- St. Mary’s College of MD. A passionate advocate for college access, Calvin is a board member for Next One Up (a non-profit organization supporting African American boys in Baltimore); an advisory board member for the National Partnership for Educational Access (NPEA); Chair of Potomac and Chesapeake Association for College Admission Counseling’s (PCACAC) Inclusion, Access, and Success Committee; and longtime faculty member of the National Association of College Admission Counseling’s (NACAC) Guiding the Way to Inclusion Conference.
