The Lodewick Visitors Center provides opportunities for student staff to grow within the program and take on increased responsibility over time.
These opportunities within our Leadership Council and Coordinator roles come with an increased pay rate and additional responsibilities, available for application after your first full year as a Tour Guide.
Paid training is required for all newly hired staff and takes place during the academic year. Newly hired Tour Guides should expect their first several months with the Visitors Center to focus on an eight-week comprehensive training program. Training may extend across academic breaks and university holidays and is designed to prepare staff for the full range of responsibilities associated with the position.
Throughout the eight-week training program, staff will develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence necessary to lead engaging and informative campus tours, support Visitors Center operations, and fulfill other student staff responsibilities. Following successful completion of the training program, newly hired Tour Guides should expect to begin giving campus tours in the spring. The timing and frequency of tour assignments will depend on operational needs and individual readiness.
Training and professional development continue throughout the academic year. After completing initial training, all staff are expected to participate in at least two continued learning sessions per semester and complete an annual tour re-evaluation. These ongoing opportunities are designed to strengthen tour delivery, reinforce expectations, and support continued growth throughout a student staff member’s time with the Visitors Center.
New Tour Guides will join the full staff for occasional Learning Sessions with different university departments throughout the year to promote growth in institutional knowledge.
Once fully trained, all staff are expected to work a minimum of 6 hours per week, including approximately 1–2 campus tours per week.
Staff must have tour availability during standard business hours, Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM.
Trained staff are also required to complete 6 Saturday shifts per semester, with most Saturday shifts including approximately one campus tour. Additional weekend commitments may be required during high-volume visit periods and major Admissions events.
Staff are expected to attend biweekly evening staff meetings. Class conflicts may be accommodated.
Certain high-demand dates throughout the year will be designated as blackout dates, during which time-off requests may be limited. When permitted, staff may arrange shift coverage for shifts they are unable to work.
Qualified applicants should demonstrate:
Applicants who are actively involved on campus and who demonstrate strong communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills are encouraged to apply.
Continued employment is based on demonstrated professionalism, reliability, attendance, performance, commitment to the program, and departmental needs.
