This session has quite a lot of information, so you may ask a question that we later on cover and address as part of our presentation. So please bear with, we're going to cover a great deal of information and we will start in roughly about 30 seconds.
OK. And we are going to get started. Thank you for coming this evening.
Just a couple of reminders for up in our we cannot see nor hear you as part of the presentation, so please just know going in that questions need to be posted to the questions section so we can communicate with you. If you do not get everything resolved here, please follow up with our offices. We'd love to assist you in their contact information will be at the end. This presentation will be emailed to you so you'll be able to catch anything you may have missed.
And hopefully we can cover everything that you have an interest in.
University of Connecticut, the flagship institution for the state of Connecticut. We have five different campuses, our main campus at stores and our of course our campuses that Hartford, Waterbury, every point in Stamford. We help cover a wide variety of options leading to us being one of the top universities in the country according to U.S. news and World Report. But more importantly from the experience of our students who enjoy a great time at the University of Connecticut as well, enjoy a very strong job placement opportunities and really the opportunity.
Just really get engaged for type experiences that they need to be part of the real world, but we offer multiple campus opportunities for students at the university. Stores would be the most competitive of all five of our campuses, but we offer a four year programs and opportunities in a number of the campuses across the state and we hope that we can find the campus that is the right fit for you.
University of Connecticut is strongly committed to the virtual diversity, inclusion, equity and access and the slide you see there. We are really hoping to bring students from across the spectrum of different backgrounds and interests to the university to help shape that experience. We know that you want to come to a place where you can feel appreciated, learn from others, have them learn from you, and really engage in that opportunity.
To to expand your horizons to learn about the world around you and how you can contribute in a very positive and meaningful way. So definitely from that aspect, please consider that when looking at the University of the the the strong diversity, inclusion and equity that we offer for our students when they come in.
OK, there are a number of programs at the University of Connecticut with over 10 schools and colleges, including our College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources or Ratcliffe Hicks. School of Agriculture, are School of Business or NIAC, School of Education or School of Fine Arts, School of Engineering, our College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the School of Nursing, the School of Pharmacy, and of course the School of Social Work. We also have a brand new school of public policy at the University of Connecticut as well.
Postgraduate program to medicine, dental medicine and law. If you think she now going in related to those special those graduate programs we have the special programs our combined BSD BMD, BMD program. We're very competitive students who are looking to guarantee a spot in those future graduate areas. They're by no means the way that all students are go into further graduate study. We offer pre law, pre Med and pre dental advising for any student who wishes.
To look at those fields in the future, not just those in the special programs, we do have an honors program. Honors is open by invitation only. No one applies directly to the Honors program and apply for UConn. It is not locked behind a certain major or certain honors college. It is open to all students equally at the University of Connecticut.
So please know whether you're in business, whether you're an education, whether in social work. You have a a wide variety of ways to get into the honest program.
We also have some very selective programs with Indo schools and colleges. I mentioned business, engineering, nursing and Fine Arts. Do you have some limitations and businesses generally have very high profile. So engineering, engineering also requires chemistry and physics as well as the 4th year of math to be considered for that program. Nursing at UConn is direct entry very popular, but because we guarantee our clinical rotations, we do have a only but so many spots in the nursing program. Typically we enroll class of 100 hundred and five in a calendar year.
In the School of Fine Arts does require a portfolio, audition or interview to be considered. So it's a talent appraisal. Makes this a selective program of you can't just walk in and want to be an actor, you need to have experience when applying to that program. And a couple of our programs are Upper division entry like your School of Education or School of Social work in similar programs in the College of Agriculture, Health and Natural Resources. Meaning you are not admitted directly to those. When you come to UConn you'd be allied health or pre teaching.
Four for the time being pre social work that I hear that might be changing soon and then again to those programs at a later point in your application process.
Please know going in that the review for the University of Connecticut is holistic, so we cover a host of different components, the rigor of your coursework, your performance in the classroom, your involvements outside the classroom, your personal qualities, and additional factors like special towns, special abilities. There's so many different components that we look at when we're reviewing a student for consideration for the University of Connecticut.
What does it take to apply to Yukon? A couple different things. Please note up front that Yukon does use the common application or a coalition application to apply to the University of Connecticut. Either one, there's no preference given either way. UConn does allow you to self report your academic records using the SRAR platform of the Scarlet. Or if you want to have a transcript sent from your counselor via naviance or other electronic upload processes, we accept those.
Or if you're looking to submit GED, that is fine. We just need some measure or record of your academic performance. Personal essay is required. Or UConn. We're not looking for one topic. There's no one thing you're going to write that makes you stand out because this is your chance to talk about yourself, who you are, your interest, your passions. What do you find to be a meaningful element of yourself that you want us to know? Or is there been something important and meaningful in your life that has happened or someone is important to you? Let us know.
In that context, what they mean to you give us a better sense of you as a person.
Please note that you can is SAT or ACT if you wish to submit a test score, but we are also test optional so you do not wish to submit a test score. You surely not required to at the University of Connecticut. You can simply go with the other criteria that you see on the screen and then we will evaluate you fairly. You know we are comfortable with that being test optional. So while students in some ways have been present themselves in the best possible light.
If you feel like test score is a strong representation of who you are, please feel free to submit them. No priority and application process is given to those whether they submit a test or do not submit a test.
We have an application fee of $80.00. Please know that in the state of Connecticut State of Connecticut only, for Connecticut students attending Connecticut high schools on November 15 will be the statewide application fee free day. So if you're a Connecticut resident attending a Connecticut secondary school, or if you're coming from out of state but attending a Connecticut secondary school and residing in Connecticut, you'd be eligible to have your application fee waive on November 15, 2020.
Lauren K.
07:10:12 PM
Hi! I am taking the SAT in October, and I have been informed that the free application day is November 15. If I want to send my scores, but they do not come in in time, what should I do? Can I send them at a later time?
Couple of components for the academics that you wanted know going in, please know that of course you kind of always looking for a strong four years of English. Minimum. Math, of course, is algebra one, geometry, algebra 2. We hope you're supplementing your time with an additional year of math or additional strong area in that realm.
OK. So we're also looking at at least two years of social studies, one being U.S. history, but the more you have, the better your opportunities are. We also do look at them a minimum of two years of a single foreign slash world language and we also do accept American Sign Language, but we highly recommend three years because that gets you both entry and graduation requirements that you can. We do look at a minimum of two years of lab science, but again, that's the minimum. Hopefully you have more.
And chemistry and physics mentioned earlier are required for engineering. For nursing chemistry is minimum required an additional electives as well which can mean the core coursework or other areas. Please know that UConn does recalculate of the Gpas from transcript suspended to us and their calculation does focus on core academic courses the first five areas that are noted there.
And with that, I'm going to turn over the presentation to my counterpart for this evening, Sharon Laflame from the Office of Student Financial Aid Services.
Hello, everyone. My name is Sharon Laflam. I'm in the financial aid office, and I'd like to just go through a few key points so everybody is aware of how our financial aid works at UConn. The first steps, of course, would be how to apply for financial aid, and that is through the FAFSA. You do it online through studentaid.gov. It's very easy and quick. Students and parents actually have to go in and create what's called an FSA.
ID and this will allow you and your parent to sign and submit the FAFSA. It is required if you're doing it online. Next, you would complete the 2324 FAFSA through studentaid.gov. What you want to do is after you complete the FAFSA, we highly recommend that you actually review what's called the student aid report. And that's a document that's generated after you complete the FAFSA form. And basically, it's a summary about your eligibility.
It's going to summarize everything that you listed on the FAFSA. So that's where you want to make sure that you haven't made any mistakes or, you know, reporting an extra 0 in income by mistake, because that can really throw you off.
For determining eligibility for federal aid you have to be a U.S. citizen or eligible non citizen. So if you have a green card there it does go over all the criteria and what you need to do to be eligible for federal aid. You have to be enrolled or accepted in an eligible program or study. This usually means if you're taking a non degree course or you're enrolling in a certificate program you would not be eligible for financial aid.

@Lauren K. That is ok, the application fee waiver is in reference to the Common or Coalition Application for CT residents or student at CT high schools. If you have them sent, your file will complete once we receive the official test scores. If you are worried about meeting the deadline for 12/15 Special Programs, you can apply test optional and then switch to test required once we receive the official scores.
There is something called satisfactory academic progress and that is required for anybody to continue receiving federal aid. Basically, it's you. There's a certain GPA that's required. There's a certain number of credits that are required to complete and that will be covered once the student is continuing and we review it on a yearly basis. So they are we can ensure that they should still receive federal aid.
Institutional aid for undocumented students. This is a great program. This happened a few years ago, but we do offer university grant funding to our undocumented students. If they're eligible. There is an application that the student can complete through their high school guidance office. It's very important that you adhere to the priority deadline because this is also part of their requirements is the same deadline.
The FAFSA, which is February 15th.
There is a status acknowledgement form. There is also you have to provide evidence of Connecticut residency, which is a requirement to receive institutional aid. You do have to be a Connecticut resident. You have to attend at least two years of high school in Connecticut, or for the equivalent, you have to have graduated for receiving the equivalent of a high school diploma.
From a Connecticut high school or in be enrolled in a public institution at higher education in Connecticut and you can visit our website, financial.uconn.edu/undocumented under score students and all this information will be covered on our website.
Max C.
07:15:21 PM
Is there an application fee waiver for out of state students?
For a Gift Aid, this is the good stuff. So if you fill out a FAFSA form and you are an on time applicant, which is February 15th, we will consider you for all types of gift date. This includes a federal Pell Grant, federal SOG grant, the Roberta B Willis need based grant that's just for Connecticut residents, the university grant. And there's different types of scholarships as well, which these do come from outside sources, but they are included.
Lauren K.
07:15:55 PM
Okay, thank you so much for your help!
07:16:11 PM
Any waivers for NY residents?
As part of your financial aid, if you're eligible, they're Roberta. Be Willis. Need merit scholarship again? That's just for Connecticut residents. The UConn merit scholarship. Those are considered through the Admissions office when you apply if you're eligible to receive them. And then there's also UConn departmental scholarships based on where you are, what your major is, you know, such as school and nursing, school of Fine Arts, a lot of our departments on campus.
Max C.
07:16:28 PM
Hi. Is there an application fee waiver for out of state students?
Offer scholarships. It's usually for our continuing students so we probably are not gonna see departmental scholarships as part of the initial awards for incoming freshmen. And then lastly just the private third party scholarships. Generally these come from the students high schools but they're everywhere so it does take a little bit of time to find them. But it's great if you can get, you know, any type of financial assistance through a scholarship because it's free.
Money and you don't have to pay it back.
Self help aid. This is the type of financial aid that the student has to pay back or the parent. So these are all of our federal loans that we offer up front to every student who applies for financial aid. There is a federal direct subsidized loans that is the best loan to get. It's based on financial need. So if you do get a subsidized loan, you do not have to start paying interest until after.
Aida Silva
07:17:51 PM
Yes, all you need to d is ask for one.
Six months after graduation, there's the federal direct unsubsidized loan. That's also a federal loan. Both of those are in the students name, so those also need to be repaid six months after graduation. But the unsubsidized loan, unfortunately, the interest is not subsidized, so it does start accruing after its first dispersed to the school. And then we also offer federal parent loans to our parent borrowers for dependents.
Students. So if your parents want to help supplement your financial aid to help you cover your your educational expenses, they can do so. This loan is in your parents name, they are the borrower. They will be required to pay it back again six months after you graduate and that is also unsubsidized. So unfortunately the interest does begin accruing after the loan is disposed to the school. And then lastly is our private.
Alternative loans. These we do offer to students because they may have different reasons for needing additional loans, such as if a parent cannot blow or a parent loan in their name, we have options for students to borrow additional funding in their name. So those are all also on our website. And there is also employment opportunities if your student wants to work on campus or if you just want to get a job in between your classes. We have lots and lots of opportunities.
On campus for students to obtain a job, just, you know, to have money on hand, pocket money, money for laundry, things like that. So that's also listed on our website. There's two different types of jobs. There is federal work study, so those are the work study. Funding has to be offered as part of the Financial aid award. We normally award them to our our highest need students first and then we go through and determine.
Paul Ostick
07:19:55 PM
@Everyone My apologies in regards to the deadline I wrote for the Special Programs. The correct deadline is November 15th or 11/15!
Who else might be eligible before funding is depleted? But we do kind of cycle through throughout the year. If you didn't get it through the first run and you do have eligibility, we might be able to go back in and give it to you. There's also student labor positions, which don't require you to have a work study award. Those are also jobs. There's quite a bit on campus where students can work if they want to get a job.

So the cost to attend this is something, uh, we do what's called the cost of attendance budget. So this is something we determine it's going to combine. This gets confusing a lot of times for families is the cost of attendance is not necessarily the cost is it's going to be to come to UConn. The cost of attendance includes your direct costs, which your tuition and fees and housing and meal plans if you're living on campus.
Yudelka Nunez-Gonzalez
07:20:58 PM
https://studentjobs.uconn.edu/
And then indirect costs such as books, transportation expenses, miscellaneous expenses, things that you're not going to be billed for on your fee bill, but we know you might need financial assistance to cover them because they are educational expenses. So we combine all of that for the cost of attendance budget and that's how we determine how much financial aid you can receive.
And we do have listed on there the different costs of attendance right now for our Connecticut students, our out-of-state students, our regional campus students, so our students who commute from home and then the out-of-state students who don't live on campus.
So those are the costs of attendance there.
So you kind of is open. Go ahead, Jason, this is your turn. Take this one.
Thank you. I'll take it from here. Sharon. Thank you so much for the information. And just a reminder, we do have staff members who are here to take your questions in the chat. So feel free to post and we'll be happy to answer any questions. But you also will get a copy of this presentation at your home. So now that you can is open and we really want you to come see our campuses, there is nothing.
Quite like talking to UConn student, get a feel of what it's like to be a Husky and how you can be part of the tradition yourself. So for the stores campus, we have two dates. The Fall Campus visit visit days will be Sunday, October 2nd and Saturday October 15th. So fantastic day to talk with professors in schools and colleges and various activities and options that we do have at the storage campus. We also have a program called Husky Forward Day where for current seniors we will host you.
Joe V.
07:22:57 PM
Are all business majors available at Storrs campus?
With and current UConn student will take you to their classes, take care to eat in the dining halls, see their room, and get a feel for like to be a literally Husky for a day. We also do offer campus tours for students available through the library Visitor Center. If you want to come up with your parents to get a presentation, walk around, get a sense of that landmarks and the highlights of the campus, please feel free to do so.
We also do have a regional campus visitation opportunities as well. For those of you looking at every point located in the southeast portion of Connecticut, that event will be on October 30th. If you want to consider attending the Hartford Campus Open house, friend, there are states capital October 29. For those you're looking at UConn Stamford, which is one of our very popular opportunities letter along the train line into New York City, fantastic industry and Stanford. We have multiple dates.
07:23:50 PM
Is there anywhere to indicate on the application that you’re a sibling for a current UConn student?
Including one coming up this weekend, Saturday, September 24th, Saturday, October 8th, October 22nd and of course November 19. And we do also offer for Waterbury Campus located very conveniently in the downtown area on October 22nd date for you to come meet with staff and speak with them as well. Get updates on admissions, even talk directly to a financial representative and get a real sense for the academic programs and opportunities that the university will.
Finally, the deadlines and some of the things that had gone over earlier, but I'll make sure that we had reiterate to you. The university application is open. It's been opened since August 1 for both common and coalition applications, so you can begin the process of applying to the University of Connecticut. Please know that UConn does use an applicant portal for you to check the status of your decision, see if any documents are missing. Keep you in the loop on where your application is currently.
In the process of you get that access, but one to two days after you submit your common or coalition application.
Paul Ostick
07:24:44 PM
@Joe V. The majority of our business majors are at the Storrs campus but there are a few select major in the School of Business that can only be completed a our regional campuses.
Heather Schrang
07:24:46 PM
Hello, yes there is a section on the application that allows you to indicate relatives that have previously have attended UConn or those that currently are.
Aida Silva
07:24:52 PM
Yes there is.

07:25:03 PM
Which campus has the engineering program? Thank you.
As mentioned, you can only requires the FAFSA for consideration of need based aid. That application is opening in just two weeks. So do make sure you begin that process of reviewing it, meeting with as a family to discuss your financial situation. We do really recommend submitting it even if you think you do not qualify is this gives you the opportunity to be considered for lower cost and lower rate loans through the federal government even if you don't think you're going to get.
Grants or other things. It is still absolutely worth it to submit to FASA to see how you can cut the cost of attendance.
As mentioned earlier, the special programs in law, medicine and dental medicine, that deadline is November 15th.
Those are combined BS, JD, BME programs. But as I mentioned, not every student who applies does get selected for the program, but we do provide counseling and services and support for all students interested in further graduate study.
Priority consideration for merit scholarships in the Honors program is given to those who apply by December 1. What I want people to understand that the deadlines N15 and December 1st are not early action. They are not early decision.
These are simply earlier dates to apply to meet certain programs and activities, but everyone here is around the same time. January 15 is a deadline for stores, but I highly recommend Don't wait till the deadline to apply to any college or university you want to know that you're in, your application is settled and getting a fair review and waiting until the absolute last minute often does not allow that to occur.
Actually, as mentioned, we do use the FAFSA and that deadline to get into the university is February 15th for stores and applicants and those who applied earlier to regional campuses.
07:27:00 PM
Can you share a bit more information about the Honors pegaran?
Please know that admissions and financial aid notifications are released through the applicant portal on March 1, so you get your full understanding of what you've been admitted to. UConn, which major if you're receiving a merit scholarship from the Admissions Office, if receiving what kind of aid package from the financial aid office, you would know that around March 1. Our commitment deadline is May 1. First applicants receive decision on March 1/2, full months to really get a sense of our programs come back to campus.
Does it meet with us and get a really good sense of what the UConn can provide? We do provide a little additional wiggle room for our regional campuses that you can apply up to May 1 for those for those opportunities at every point Stamford, Waterbury and Hartford. But I recommend you, you know you want to get your college decisions done in a timely manner. Don't wait until April this major application to regional campuses. Get those done early. Please know the process that you would select both the first choice.
10 Second Choice Campus if you wish a second choice campus and a first choice and second choice major. So, for example, if you apply to, say, nursing, but don't get an offer, we would consider you for your second choice major. You're not denied based upon the major that you applied to at the University of Connecticut.
Lauren K.
07:28:08 PM
On the Common Application, if my brother is currently attending, should I put he has no degree, since he has not graduated yet? I did not see a drop down to say currently attending, so I just assumed admissions would know he is currently attending.
Kathleen Stango
07:28:08 PM
@Connor C - All engineering majors must be completed at the Storrs campus, with the exception of the Computer Science program, which can be completed at either Storrs or Stamford. Students can begin Engineering curriculum at any campus but must transition to Storrs after 2 years to finish the degree.
And with this, this our contact information for various offices. We are so many programs and opportunities like the honors program, like a biomedical engineering major, like our Husky thon, like the skydiving club, like Division One Sports. So many things we could cover this evening and there's just not enough time. But that's why I want to give you a little bit of a taste of what Yukon offers. But have you come meet the representatives during the visits to your schools or come to campus, come see us, get a real sense of opportunities.
Back to university, we would show recommended you see it. It really gives you the best sense of who we are and what we're about. No matter if you can was your last choice or you kind of your first choice, by the time you wouldn't graduates, everyone was wearing the blue and white as a real campus spirit at UConn and we hope to be able to include you in our upcoming class at one of our campuses.
Have a great rest of your day, and we look forward to seeing you at the University of Connecticut. Take care.
